OUR PLAYBOOK TECHNIQUES FOR IMPROVED MENTAL WELL-BEING

In order to achieve high performance, athletes must be physically, technically, tactically, and socially ready, but it is just as important to be mentally ready and strong. Current research shows that mental training can improve growth mindset in young athletes by teaching that the mind is like a muscle and can get stronger with use. Athletes who are mentally strong show the ability to be better teammates, manage their time, be patient, persistent, and work hard. PCLG provides athlete, coach, and parent education on the benefits of incorporating mental skills training into athletic practices.

Our Modules Include:

Visualization

Athletes can create a mental image of an outcome to elicit feelings of relaxation and competence, which ultimately leads to improved performance and focus.

Positive Self-Talk

When athletes use a positive internal dialogue, they develop more awareness, self-confidence, and endurance.

Goal-setting

Goal-setting provides essential direction to help athletes gain confidence and believe in their ability to succeed.

Gratitude

Expressing gratitude is about noticing something good and showing appreciation which leads to greater happiness and better overall physical and mental health.

Journaling

Writing down thoughts and feelings in order to understand them more clearly provides an athlete a place to reflect and work through complex problems.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness helps athletes to focus their minds and train their attention and awareness to be present in the moment.

Mentorship

Coaches can use our PCLG playbook to teach young athletes the mental skills they need to succeed on and off the playing surface. Training is provided through athlete and coach mentorship, informational sessions for coaches, athletes, and parents, and a coaching-leadership education program for aspiring coaches of youth sports. Playing sports is about more than just winning. Sport provides the framework in which young athletes learn important character traits such as teamwork, leadership, compassion, self-motivation, confidence, and respect. Understanding and practicing these skills will lay the foundation for young athletes to be leaders in school, on the court, on the field, and later in life.
